"Foreword" by Irina Antonova - Director of the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts

FOREWORD
Photography, especially modern one, has recently begun to exhibit in arts museums, as people did not consider it to be art for a long time. However, photography takes an honorable place in state and private collections along with painting and graphic arts. The exhibition of Peter Lindbergh, notorious in the world of fashion in The State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts commemorated this significant step in understanding and reappraisal of photography. The photographs presented here have already exhibited in museums and galleries of many European capitals, although this is the first time the Russian audience is offered to see this personal show.

Experts in arts often interpret fashionable photographs as an attribute of the work of show-business, not more. However, Lindbergh demonstrates a significant trend in photography that can be called post-modern age classics. This master is interesting for the fact that in his works he addresses the world history of photography, while skillfully refining familiar images to advertising context. Lindbergh is far from banal advertising: he displays not things, but images, not products, but the spirit, state and emotion. The most promiment actresses, singers and models pose him, but the photographer does not idealize their look, but aims at giving them expression and individuality. At that, Lindbergh's photos feature dynamism and strictness. The laconic combination of black and white that is always in fashion marks the classic background of these works. Dialogue with audience - this is what matters for photography, whose characters are always in the center of attention due to their status.

The appearance of Lindbergh's works in this museum is a significant step in the development of relationships between the academic world of science and the vibrant present, and we hope this show will be interesting not only for specialists, but also for everyone concerned in photogrpahy, fashion and style of the violent and amazing age we live in.
